Establishing a night time routine for a healthy body and healthy skin is an important part of self care. We’ve put together some tips for creating a night time routine that rocks and will keep you not only feeling good but looking good too!

  1. Cleanse your skin - twice!

Start by removing your eye make up with a purpose-designed cleanser that won’t sting your delicate eye area. Next, perform your first cleanse to remove makeup, sunscreen, pollution, dirt and oil that may have accumulated during the day. Repeat your cleanse, remember, once for your makeup, once for your skin. Even if you don’t wear makeup be sure to stay consistent with a double cleanse as you will still be removing a layer of sweat, pollution, dirt and sunscreen. You may choose to use the same cleanser or use a different cleanser for the first and second cleanse. Ask your skin therapist what would work best for your skin.

  1. Apply a toner

After cleansing, apply a toner. When we say toner, we don’t mean those old school alcohol-based toners that can strip and dry the skin. We recommend a lotion suited to your skin type or a skin mist. These products will condition and hydrate the skin as well as rebalance your skin’s pH levels after cleansing and improve the penetration and performance of the topical ingredients applied afterwards.

  1. Eye cream

Apply a specialised eye cream to target the delicate skin around your eyes. Using a dedicated eye cream can help reduce the appearance of dark circles and puffiness and keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay. You generally only need the size of a grain of rice for both eyes. Remember, the skin around your eyes is the thinnest and most delicate skin on your body, so eye cream should always be applied before any active serums to minimise the risk of dragging the active ingredients around the delicate eye contour.

  1. Include a serum (or two)

Serums are formulated with a high concentration of active ingredients, including but not limited to, antioxidants, vitamins and peptides. These ingredients are designed to deeply penetrate the skin and can target specific skin concerns such as hydration, pigmentation, dullness, loss of elasticity or acne. Serums are typically lightweight and fast-absorbing into the skin. They can enhance the overall effectiveness of a skincare routine by providing additional nourishment and protection.  Serums are particularly effective to use at night when your skin is doing repair and restorative work while you sleep

  1. Moisturise

Choose a nourishing night cream or moisturiser to hydrate and replenish your skin while you sleep.During the day, your skin is exposed to environmental stressors such as sun, wind and pollution which can lead to moisture loss.

Of course, your skin also goes through a natural repair and regeneration process while you sleep. By applying a moisturiser at night you can support this process and provide essential nutrients your skin needs to repair itself. Applying a moisturiser at night can also prevent trans-epidermal water loss, keeping your skin hydrated and healthy.

Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, Vitamins A, B & C are particularly helpful in promoting collagen production, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improving the overall texture of your skin.

One final word on your night time routine: be consistent! Consistency allows skincare products to work as intended. Regular use of products allows your skin to adapt to the ingredients and their effects. Consistency can help your skin acclimate to the active ingredients in the products, leading to better tolerance and improved efficacy.

Remember, prevention is better than the cure! A regular skincare routine that includes cleansing, serums and moisturisers can help prevent common skin issues such as acne and dehydration.Consistency helps maintain a healthy skin and can prevent future problems. Skipping steps or using products sporadically can undo the progress you’ve made. Being consistent establishes good habits for long-term skin health.
