Skin Needling: The Treatment Taking The World By Storm

treatments May 18, 2020

In recent years, micro needling has created a world-wide sensation, for the most part due to the outstanding results that can be achieved with this technique. Along with the hype built up around this treatment which has taken social media by storm and made micro needling so well known, there is an equal amount of mystery still surrounding it. Questions such as how does it work, does it hurt and how long will my skin take to recover are commonly asked and we are here to answer them.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Micro needling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a simple procedure that can typically be completed within 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. Our micro needling device, the Dermapen 4, glides over the skin creating tiny micro channels. The skin’s natural repair process is then triggered, resulting in an increased production of collagen and elastin, resurfacing, retexturising and overall skin renewal. The Dermapen 4 is deal in treating an array of common skin concerns such as:

  • acne scarring
  • scarring
  • lines and wrinkles
  • skin sagging/loss of elasticity
  • uneven skin texture
  • pigmentation
  • redness
  • acne and congestion
  • enlarged pores
  • stretch marks
WHICH MICRO-NEEDLING TECHNIQUE IS THE BEST?

Although this technique has been around for a long time, with the earliest recorded treatment performed in 1905, we are now seeing the greatest advancements in micro needling technology yet. Traditional dermal rolling techniques have most commonly been used in the past but have now been surpassed by pen devices due to superiority in results, comfort and downtime. A dermal roller penetrates the skin at an angle causing more chance of ‘tears’ through the skin leading to more side effects and therefore longer recovery time and being a manual device, needle depth cannot be changed. On the other hand, a micro-needling pen device penetrates the skin vertically causing less epidermal damage and is digital meaning needle depth and speed are customisable and the treatment can be performed around delicate facial contours such as the eyes.

IS THE PROCEDURE PAINFUL?

Due to the improved design of the new Dermapen 4 device, there is an immense decrease in epidermal (skin) injurytherefore the level of pain from the needling procedure has been significantly reduced. A mild, uncomfortable ‘scratching’ sensation may be experienced throughout the treatment which, followed by the application of the DP Dermaceuticals sheet mask, is immediately lifted leaving the skin feeling cool and calm.

WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME INVOLVED?

Contrary to popular belief, micro needling is a simple and non-invasive treatment with very minimal downtimeYou may experience facial redness for 12-48 hours after the treatment. Most people are able to return to normal daily activities immediately after the treatment. Application of DP Dermaceuticals Cover Recover following the treatment will seal and heal the skin and cover any redness for an immediate return to work.

IS NUMBING CREAM USED TO PERFORM THIS TREATMENT?

No, not only is the application of numbing cream unsafe and unnecessary, it also inhibits great results. Most importantly, the application of a topical anaesthetic involves risks. If applied incorrectly, like leaving it on for too long or using too much, it is possible to cause adverse effects such as toxicity. The risk far outweighs the gain, especially for such a simple procedure that involves very little discomfort. A topical anaesthetic is also a vasoconstrictor, meaning it becomes difficult to achieve the desired inflammatory response necessary in triggering collagen production and resurfacing.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

The number of treatments required will vary, depending on the type and nature of the condition we are treating. However, like with many of our treatments, consistency is the key to great results, meaning the greatest benefits will come from multiple treatments. Here is a general guide:

  • Rejuvenation: 3-6 treatments/6-8 weeks apart
  • Acne scarring: 4-6 treatments/6-8 weeks apart
  • Stretch marks: 4-8 treatments/6-8 weeks apart
  • Pigmentation: 4-6 treatments/2-4 weeks apart
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE PROCEDURE?

For optimal results, an appropriate homecare regime should be determined by your clinician to encourage the skin to prepare, strengthen and fortify (especially for thin or delicate skin areas). A cosmeceutical grade skincare range works on a cellular level to stimulate changes in the skin and therefore will not only prepare the skin and encourage the best possible result, but also maintain ongoing results.

WHAT IS THE POST PROCEDURE CARE?

As micro needling is now such a non-invasive treatment, the aftercare required is very minimal, meaning you are allowed to return to most normal daily activities immediately following the procedure. Just a few simple rules will allow you to get the most out of your micro needling treatment. SPF sun protection should be worn every day. Post procedure you should avoid:

  • strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours
  • hot showers, saunas and spas for 24-48 hours
  • active products and exfoliants for 3-5 days
  • applying makeup for 24 hours
HOW LONG SHOULD IT TAKE BEFORE I START TO SEE RESULTS?

Typically, you will see subtle results after the first treatment. Lasting and more significant results will become visible after 3 to 6 treatments (spaced 2-8 weeks apart). The condition of your skin will continue to improve over the next 6-12 months after a course of treatments, especially when combined with the recommended post-treatment care.
